HOW is health care a privilege? It is absolutely and fundamentally a right and any smart, ethical government will know that ensuring its population is healthy by ensuring access to healthcare leads to a more productive work force, better economy and overall more competitive country. The more healthy people you have working, the more productive you are. So it's not just morally the right thing to do, it's also the smarter thing to do.
Back to your comment of privilege vs. right. Let me understand: if I am a member of this democracy who works full time and pays taxes but my employer decides to yank my healthcare coverage because they don't feel I should have that "privilege" anymore, then what? Are you suggesting that I shouldn't have any recourse because I don't have the right to be healthy? That I should just be left to wallow? I'm sorry, but since when has this whole "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" nonsense turned into a "to each his own" and "I've got mine so who cares about you"? Is that really where this country is going?
Hi Arrayray,
I couldn't agree with you more. The proper role of government is to protect individual rights and as you correctly assert health care is not a right.
